Chicago can’t block ads for video games

The courts have once again ruled in favor of freedom of expression.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois blocked the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) attempt to ban advertisements for M-rated video games on public transportation. In 2008, the Chicago Transit Authority had removed advertisements of the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise from its vehicles and stations.

Consistent with all previous state and federal cases involving video game censorship, the U.S. District Court ruled against the CTA. The court specifically rejected the CTA's claim connecting video games and violence.

We hope the Supreme Court upholds this long string of cases that support free speech when it reviews Schwarzenegger v. EMA/ Entertainment Software Association this fall. To find out more, visit our Supreme Court Action Center.
