Justice O’Connor: video games a force for good
Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female member of the Supreme Court, believes video games have the power to revitalize civics knowledge in the United States.
According to the former Justice, the lack of federal funding for history and civics classes has resulted in student's ignorance of basic government concepts and institutions. To close the gap between civics and other subjects like math and science, O'Connor founded the nonprofit iCivics.
The iCivics project offers a series of web-based video games that allow users to participate in the political process. Players can break a tie on the Supreme Court, be President for a day and run a law firm.
Play through O'Connor's games, then apply your newfound civic knowledge by signing up for the Video Game Voters Network. Why? Because the Supreme Court where O'Connor once sat is now deciding your rights as a video gamer. Find out more at our Supreme Court Action Center.
