Report says computer and video game industry “outpaces” rest of entertainment industry
A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report released today found that the computer and video game industry is leading in in consumer disclosure, retail compliance and enforcement of responsible marketing practices.
The report specifically praised the computer and video game industry for:
- Restricting the target-marketing of mature-rated products;
- Clearly and prominently displaying rating information; and,
- Restricting children's access to mature-rated products at retail stores.
The FTC specifically applauded the Entertainment Software Rating Board:
"The Commission commends the ESRB for its new online ratings summaries, which provide a more detailed explanation of the content that is factored into a game's rating. This tool should enhance parental understanding of the ratings and the ratings process."
As a result, the FTC report found that 80 percent of mature-rated video game sales to minors are stopped.
It's encouraging to get this kind of positive feedback about video games — especially from a government agency like the FTC. For years, it seemed that most of the government discussion of video games revolved around uninformed criticism of games and gamers for the purpose of scoring political points.
VGVN is asking supporters to spread the word about this important report by sending a letter to the editor of local newspapers. Will you take a moment to write a quick letter?
