Thank You
To Governor Rendell
Too often we're forced to recognize politicians who attack video games by proposing law after law, only for each one to be thrown out by the courts. It's nice to be able to acknowledge an elected official for taking a positive step, Pennsylvania State Governor Edward Rendell has distinguished himself by teaming up with the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to create a public service announcement employing television and radio ads to educate parents about the ESRB rating system.
It is important to support those who are standing up for our rights and the rights of video game players. Please thank Governor Rendell for his efforts to educate Pennsylvania parents about the ESRB ratings, and for understanding the negative consequences of violent video game regulation. Some Points to Consider
- The ESRB rating system is an effective way to make sure that material inappropriate for children not get into their hands. I applaud you for your public service announcement to encourage parents to use this rating system. Your efforts will help make a big difference.
- The ESRB system (similar to the voluntary motion picture rating system) provides rating information and content descriptors so that parents can make informed game purchase decisions for their families. The ESRB requires that video games be labeled with content information and prohibits video game publishers from marketing mature and adult rated games to children. Additionally, retailers have voluntarily adopted policies to enforce the ESRB rating system and not sell mature and adult rated games to children.
